‘That was delicious. Thank you so much.’ Joanne wiped her mouth with a napkin then finished her wine. The lasagne had been rich and garlicky, the bread crusty and buttery, the chips fat and fluffy on the inside.

‘My pleasure, Joanne.’ Max swept a chip around his plate, clearing up the barbecue sauce that had come with his burger, then he wiped his hands on his napkin. ‘I really enjoyed it too.’

Their food had arrived within half an hour of ordering and in that time they’d chatted about their days and the weather forecast for the next month – it was meant to get a lot colder – about their jobs and weekend plans. Max would be working the following day as the library opened on Saturday mornings but he was going to a friend’s on Sunday for lunch. The friend who was married with two young children didn’t live in the village. He often invited Max for dinner and Max joked that he thought it was because they took pity on him as one of their only single friends.

‘Fancy another drink?’ she asked.

‘That would be lovely and shall we look at desserts?’

‘Uh . . . ’ Joanne actually felt quite full but dessert sounded tempting.

‘What about sharing one?’

‘All right.’

‘They have churros and they’re always nice.’

‘Sure. I’ll just pop to the loo first then order on my way back.’

‘But this evening’s meant to be my treat.’

‘How about if I get dessert this time then next time I’ll pay for the main course and you can get the dessert?’

‘Good plan.’

She picked up their glasses and carried them to the bar, her heart fluttering with pleasure at the thought of another evening like this.

She was washing her hands when the door opened and Roxie came in.

‘Hello there!’ Roxie sashayed to her side and wrapped an arm around her shoulders then met her eyes in the mirror above the sink. ‘How’s it going? Fletcher and I have been on tenterhooks.’

‘Tenterhooks?’

‘Joanne, really? It means that we’ve been tense, hoping it’s going well. But judging from the way you kept laughing and gazing into each other’s eyes, it’s going extremely well.’

‘It is actually.’ Joanne smiled at their reflections. ‘I’m having fun.’

‘I am so glad to hear that. He’s as nice as we thought then?’

‘Very sweet and attentive and . . . I’m not sure if this makes sense but it’s like I can see a kindred spirit in him.’

‘In what way?’

‘Not to make him sound like a sad case or anything, but I think he’s been a bit lonely too and he understands how it feels to want the chance to enjoy the company of someone who gets that.’

‘Wow, you two are making progress. Kindred spirits as well.’ Roxie hugged her with one arm. ‘I’m delighted. But seriously, Joanne, he looks like he’s into you. I don’t think this is just because he’s lonely or those huge glasses of wine you were drinking. He can’t take his eyes off you.’

‘Really?’

‘Yes. So get back out there and have another drink.
